Star Eyes x Self: FAIL

It's pretty official, and I'm calling it: FAIL!
Sure they're cute, but they all look just like Star Eyes, and Star Eyes already exists, so these aren't needed. Oh well, I learned! And there's lots more crosses to come. :-)

Star Eyes x Self BLOOMS

And boooooriiiing, they look just like Star Eyes so far haha!
Better luck on other non-self crosses I've got in the works.
Hey,  at least I'm trying.
Haha lookit my foot down there, ewpz.

Some Nerds at MAAVS!

There were MANY members of African Violet Nerds at MAAVS, but it proved pretty much impossible to get a FULL group shot of all of us, because it's hard to get everyone all together at once! So this was the best we got:

Left to right: Barbara Jones, Linda Kilby, Vicki Carr, Kitty Hedgepeth, me, Sue Hoffman, and Libbie & Tom Glembocki

NERDS RULE!!!!!!!!

Why Does This Keep Happening!?

I have GOTTA stop hanging around with that dude from Lyndon Lyon Greenhouses... New African violets seem to follow me home whenever I see him AHHHHHHHHH!!

Top row: Sierra Sunrise, Heart's Aglow, Untamed Heart, Cosmic Blast
Middle row: Cupid's Jewel, Heartbreak Kid, Dark Kiss
Bottom Row: Pip Sqeek, Li'l Periscope, Teeny Bopper, Little Blue Bandit, Little Darlin'

Yeah 3 more standards in that lot, just what I needed. For those keeping count, this brings me up to EIGHT standards now! The truly sick part? I had 3 more on my wishlist that are currently out of stock and I'm waiting on 'em. Please call the loony bin and reserve a bed for me ASAP! Oh, and make sure the room has a window with good light for the plants.

MINE! Left to right: Lil' Georgie, Star Eyes, and Wood Nymph

And here's a pic of the whole class, just so you know I wasn't only competing against myself haha

Big winnah!! Star Eyes

Blurry azz pic but I'm too excited to waste time taking another one right yet!

Sad News...

This morning I got very sad news that Janice Bruns passed away last night. She was a top show grower back in the day and contributed a lot to the African violet world at large for many years. Also the beloved wife of Joe Bruns, who is one of my favorite people on this planet.

My heart is hurting so bad for my friend Joe right now. His devotion to Jan has always reminded me of something out of a movie--I swear, he loved her more every minute that passed in their 46 year marriage.

The beautiful couple Joe and Jan Bruns on their wedding day
August 7th, 1967
I'd like to collect cards from everyone to send to Joe. He is a treasure in our African violet world building and maintaining FC2, handling the official registrations of new African violet hybrids, webmaster of LyndonLyon.com, plus more.
Please take a moment and let him know you're thinking of him and his loss.

How Big Are These Gonna GET!?

I'm kinda proud and had to show off, these are the biggest African violets I've ever grown!! (and holy crap, they're gonna get bigger!?)

Sweet Affair and Inner Strength, I just repotted them into 3.5" pots, never had any AVs in pots this big!! I was tempted to throw on some croutons and just call 'em lunch!! But I resisted and just slipped on the upgraded 9" (!omg!) rings and called 'em two jobs well done.

Sweet Affair

Repotting standards is soooooo much different than those little minis and semis I'm used to! I wasn't allowed to rip leaves and roots off like I usually have so much fun doing haha! And then setting them down in the pot, it was hard to know if they were centered or not. And then to fill in soil with all those huge leaves in the way OMG! This is quite a learning experience.

Inner Strength

Don't make fun of that HUGE gap on Inner Strength at 6:00--My hands were/are ITCHING to groom off 12:00, 3:00 and 9:00, but my friends coaching me over the internet said "LEAVE IT ALONE it will fill in!!" These friends are great AV growers, but they aren't show-growers, so.... What say you? (P.S. to my coaches reading this, don't get mad that I'm asking for more opinions!!)

So anyhooz, that's that. I guess I am growing standards now for real.

Oh Yeah, LOOT!

I forgot to post about what I got today at the Bay State AVS luncheon!
I accidentally bought 4 plants--EWPZ!
Blue Dragon, Perfect Harmony, (what's up with me getting standards lately... Who in the world am I!?) Jolly Frills, and Ness' Crinkle Blue.
Aaaand in the raffle I wasn't winning anything, but my awesome friend Debbie Vallidis got one of her tickets called, which she handed to me! So I grabbed the totes adorbz itty-bitty tea set. Then lo and behold one of my tickets was called and Debbie didn't want anything, so I grabbed a vintage and outdated book to add to my vintage and outdated African violet book collection. They're always so funny!

More from Bay State African Violet Society's 2013 Luncheon

Good sales plants, good food, good raffle, good talk from guest speaker Donna Brining from Fancy Bloomers. What more can I say? :-)

Micro Sinny Cross UPDATE

Star Eyes x Self update! I took one pic last Wednesday and one today, to show how fast they're growing. (You can also see the previous weeks' pics here and here.)

October 3rd, 2013

TODAY - October 9th, 2013
I'll try and keep updating every coupla weeks. I'm gonna have to be extra careful not to pee my pants when they start flowering, I'm soooo excited! I think soon I'll need to move them around a bit to space them better.

Plants Plants Plants 10.8.13

Here's what's crappenin' around my plant stand right now! (Click pix to biggerize)

Random things that need to stay domed (dome taken off for the pic, of course..)
Babies on the leaf of Lovestruck, bright-azz flower on Episcia 'Cleopatra',
eleventy billion suckers from Ness' Tiny Flame trying to root,
and of course my micro sinnie Star Eyes x Self babies getting bigger every minute!
(that will get its own update tomorrow)

The sicko ward--I've not found any buggies on the yellow sticky trap which is a good sign,
but I'm still pretty skurrd, so they're staying in here for a while longer!
They seem ok with it, tho.

My micro sinnies are blooming in a MAJOR way! Of course, because the MAAVS show is a whole month away. Jerks.
Also have a few more crosses in the works, 4 seed pods are getting nice & fat. One pod is iffy, prolly didn't take.
Just note, I took the dome off for this pic, otherwise everything stays under there at all times for humidity.

Last month's order from Lyndon Lyon Greenhouses, potted up looking pretty good.
I think I'll raise them to be closer to the light in a minute, 'cos they're reaching
and now I'm embarrassed because you saw them doing that.

The big tray! No longer staying domed, 'cos things were getting too crowded.
I want show plants someday, and crowing ain't gonna do much for those goals.
I raised it to be closer to the light 2 days ago, and things are starting to look better already.
The standards are still freaking me out, getting bigger all the time.
Keeping the two flowers on Lovestruck, just 'cos it's pretteh to look at.
I messed up trying some different fertilizer and a few of the semis got crown rust/fert burn.
They'll be fine, just look kinda junky at the moment.
Li'l Ballerina was losing her variegation and growing huge leaves up on the top shelf,
so I moved her down and I'm keeping her in this sundae cup thingie
('cos that tiny pot she's in dries out too fast to keep her "out"),
but also, I rigged it up a bit to keep her closer to the light.
It's working out great!
Her variegation is back, and the leaves are no longer getting huge looking for more light.
Full frontal stand pic! I'm only using 2 outta 4 shelves on the stand, I will prolly need to get a 3rd going pretty soon.

Ermagerd!!

Making these silly African violet-related memes for the Lyndon Lyon Greenhouses facebook page has become quite the little side-addiction for me. If they're not funny, please don't even tell me 'cos I don't wanna know!

First Micro Sinny Cross update!

Not a whole lot to say I guess, except here they are today in case anyone is as excited as I am and wants to see updates. :-D

Plants Plants Plants 9.17.13

I think I'll start posting pics of my collection every month or so. Maybe it'll help keep me in check (on a few levels).. Plus it might be fun to watch things progressing. Good times? Ok, so here goes! (click pics to biggerize)

Here are most of the new ones I picked up at Lyndon Lyon Greenhouses 4 weeks ago. (the others are in a different tray) Dome taken off for picture.
Um wow, those standards are getting BIG and it's FREAKING ME OUT!!!

Yeah, here's where people will know for sure that I have lost my mind.
I was JUST at LLG, and yet I came home and ordered a few more from them which were delivered a few days ago.
*sigh* Yes, really.

The micro sinnies!
Got a few more crosses in the works.
Also disbudded one to see if that helps with timing bloom cycles for a show..
Ok I dunno wtf I'm doing, but it's fun to experiment and pretend I do sometimes.

The sicko ward!
All treated up and sharing space with a sticky card just in case.... *shivers*

The other sicko ward, a Cherry Princess sucker I'm hoping will be pest-free.

Some AV leaves, some tiny mini AVs, and 3 micro sinnie seed cups
Pretty sure only that one on the bottom right will actually amount to anything, the other 2 still haven't germinated. They weren't crosses, just muscicola dark and pusilla 'White Sprite'. Anyone got seeds of either of those? Trade for seeds of muscicola regular?

Well, that's my collection as of right meow! Hope anyone cares. :-p

Squeeeee BABIES!

FINALLY made a successful micro sinningia cross!  Although it feels weird to say "cross"  because actually I made it fly solo. But anyhooz,  can't wait to see what comes from Star Eyes x self! (took this pic just now after spacing out the babies a bit. It took a month for the seeds to sprout, then a week until I dared move them around. Will post more pics as they progress, of course!)

SPAM ON MY BLOG!

GAHD lately there is SO much spamming in the comments here on Fuzzy Foliage lately... Thankfully most of it is automatically removed by Blogger. But it's just annoying, 'cos I get all excited thinking someone actually commented on a post--But nope, it's just a thinly-veiled guise to post about Viagra or some such nonsense.

Side-question for the actual readers: Y U NO COMMENT MUCH!?

So anyhooz, I've decided to take drastic measures here in an effort to make myself feel like I'm in control. I'mna post my OWN Spam on my OWN blog.

BEHOLD!

I love it best with eggs.
But honestly there's no wrong way to eat it.

Happy Friday everyone! :-)

Tell Me, Who Are You?

'Cos I really wanna know!

As usual, my micro sinnies are putting on a flower show (I swear it's like they never stop) BUT... I I've got a little case of "whoooo are you?" going on around here! Anyone wanna play CSI: Gesneriads? Click pics to biggerize!

I have this one labeled as Wood Nymph. Gorgeous and has 6 flowers open right now:

YOW! That is one gorgeous little container, is it not?
Of course there's never a show to enter when I have something this nice.
But guess what? I've got another container of Wood Nymph that I am pretty sure came from a different source, and there's one flower on it right now which it's much different:

And this isn't one of my weird sport things, the ones in this container always bloom this way.
When I did some googling, the one with bigger/darker flowers looks like maybe Razzmatazz or Carefree Regina? And Wood Nymph (for the most part) looked more like that one in the 2nd pic. I never got around to buying either Razzmatazz or Carefree Regina, but could it be one of those and was just labeled wrong? Anyone know? HALP PLZ!!

And here's one last pic where you can see them near each other and how obviously they aren't the same plant, whoooooever they are!!

If anyone knows, shout out the answer!

I love my micro Siningias, and I wanna keep them labeled properly!

Groomed, Repotted, Marathoned, & Domed!

Meant to post this yesterday but was busy with my real job. Got all my new plants fixed up 2 nights ago! (Click pics to biggerize!)

Ta-daaa don't they look perfect? Now to keep them that way..
(Note, I left one bloomstalk on Lovestruck 'cos I just wanna see the flower--it WILL come off as soon as it opens!)

Domed!
Oh and here's a little "Sunday Funny" for ya... I made this for the LLG Facebook page and honestly, I'm quite proud of my work:

Let there be LEAVES!

African Violet Collection 2.0 / Adventures in Dolgeville

Time to start over! No more crying over spilled pollen! Get it? Thrips joke. It MITE not be funny... Ok, anyone know a good Mealy joke so I can complete the holy trifecta?

Anyhooz, where's the best place to get a new collection? Lyndon Lyon Greenhouses in Dolgeville NY of course! Especially considering the 25% off coupon happening this week! (tomorrow's the last day, GET THERE!)
Yeeeeeeeaaaah!!!

Ok so starting with the BEST THING FIRST: Here's my new box of awesomeness! A baker's dozen of new pretties. Now listen up all you excitable shopaholics, I purposefully did not go buckwild and grab a TON, because I think it's better if I keep it to just a few. That way maybe, JUST MAYBE, I can really focus and finally grow an actual SHOWPLANT worth a damn.

Let go of the past, here is the FUTURE!

Here's a list of what I got (click on any that are linked to order your own--Continental US orders get 15% off this month by entering code AUGUST during checkout at LyndonLyon.com!):

MINIS:
Li'l Ballerina (One of my all-time FAVES, had to replace)
Ness' Tiny Flame (Had it before, needed it again)
Roller Rink (have wanted this one forever!)

SEMIS:
Lyon's June Bug (June Bug one of my nicknames, so it was a must)
Pixie Storm (never had this but decided to give it a shot)
Indigo Doll (I have a daughter named Indigo, so duh, obvies I needed that!)
Lexi (she was the last of the "old collection" that I tossed reluctantly!)
Pixie Redhead (Had that before, needed it again!)
Winter Love (I love WINTER it's my fave season, so it just seems right)

"WEED":
Episcia 'Cleopatra' (the leaves are just too pretty to resist.. Had it before, needed it back)

STANDARDS--YES, YOU READ THAT RIGHT!
Inner Strength (We ALL need that, who knew it came in plant form?)
Lovestruck (just WOW this is one vibrant flower)
Sweet Affair (Winner of 2nd best new cultivar at the 2013 AVSA convention!)
Ok now let me be perfectly clear: Those 3 frighten me! Paul made me go way outta my comfort zone when he pushed a STANDARD at me. But then I thought well if one is good, three is better so... OMG THREE NEW STANDARDS jumped into my box!

Pics of my new pretties!!

THE MINIS (Always my favest)
Top: Roller Rink, left: Li'l Ballerina, right: Ness' Tiny Flame

THE SEMIS:
(IMPORTANT: Keep in mind I was grabbing the chimeras from the "super secret employees only" room so they're stock quality (a bit overgrown and crazy, this isn't what you get when you order or shop like a normal customer--but we all know I am not normal!) We kept all the crazy extra leaves on so they'd be nice and cushioned for the 5 hour car ride.)
Top L-R: Pixie Redhead, Lexi, Winter Love
Bottom L-R: Indigo Doll, June Bug, Pixie Storm

WEED:
Episcia 'Cleopatra'

OMG... THE BIG GUYS
Top: Lovestruck, left: Sweet Affair, right: Inner Strength
Yeah methinks, I'mna need a lot more than "INNER STRENGTH" to pull of growing BIG plants!
So yup, there's my AWESOME NEW COLLECTION! After my work shift is over today, I guess you all know what I'll be doing--Repotting!

Now for some pics from around LLG:

Our awesome "group employee pic"... Paul Sorano the owner, and me the facebook page admin.
All other employees were too busy actually working and/or too shy to be in a pic. :-p

Stay tuned!
My BFF Shea from Fat Sheamus Productions did some filming to make a little sumpin'-sumpin'!

"KITTEEEHHHHH!!!"
This is Rocky the LLG mascot/viscous guard animal. I always love seeing him!!

Actual photo of me dead and in heaven!

To see more from the awesome stuff from the greenhouses, be sure to head on over to the facebook page. Some stuff has already been posted, but there's LOTS more to come trust me!
