Video - Separating Babies From Leaves

Remember that video I made back in February about how to start African violets from leaves? Well, those leaves made babies! Now I will show you how to separate them:

And yes--that biggest, healthiest Rob's Antique Rose baby was mailed out this afternoon to #1 Fuzzy Foliage Blog Stalker Reader Dawn!

  1. Ann-Marrie,

Thanks for showing us how to seperate babies.
I am suprised that it takes short time, about 3 months, to make rather big babies from their mom leaves.

  2. Your videos are so helpful, thank you! When starting leaf babies how long should I leave them in the mini greenhouse, until I'm ready to pull off babies?

  3. Kiko--Sometimes it's fast, sometimes it's not! This time we were lucky! :-)

buhnuh--There's no definitive answer, really. I just say "Until they are at a size that you feel comfortable separating/handling them."

  5. Ann-Marie I think what buhnuh was actually asking was do we leave the leaf babies in the greenhouses/clamshells whatever lol all the way until we are ready to split them? Or are they safe to come out once we seem them sprouting/growing off the mama leaf above soil etc? I would like to know this too in case I get lucky have a leaf or two take off LOL

  6. Yes, Dawn that is exactly what I was trying to say. Thanks for asking much clearer, lol.

  7. Oh, sorry! Yeah leave them in there until you're ready to take the babies off. And I usually even put the babies back in after removing them, until they've got a couple rows of strong leaves at least. :-)

  8. Wow M3RMA1D (Ann-Marie) Thank you so much for this video. I'm definitely give propergating leaves a try. By the way, I have just recieved my violets from the VioletBarn in the mail yesterday. I'm so happy to see my new starter plants! I have Irish Flirt(My First Miniture plant, also it has blooms :D), Warm Sunshine(Standard with no blooms yet but will eventually have yellow blooms), and Ma's Ching Dynasty(Standard with no blooms yet). So those are my new plants and hopely I'll have more to come.:D
Also, do you know how to mail violet leaves properly? The reason I ask this is because my step-grandmother from Texas raises African violets herself and wants to deliver some leaves for me to grow (I live in Maryland. What is the best way to mail the leaves so I can tell her how? I would be greatful if you can give me some help on this or know anyone who does.

  9. Dakjak--I make sure the plant is watered properly so that the leaves are nice and firm. Then I cut them and put 'em into plastic ziplock-type baggies. Then I put them in a padded envelope and mail them away! (or if I'm mailing a lot, I tape them to the inside of a box (so it's not rattling around bruising the leaves) and mail it away.) :-)

  10. PS Dakjak--You should take me up on my leaf offer in the Fuzzy Foliage/AVSA Promotion! http://avnerdgirl.blogspot.com/2011/03/fuzzy-foliage-avsa-promotion.html

  11. Thanks Ann-Marie for your help. :) I'll make sure I'll tell my step-grandmother what you just told me how to deliver the violet leaves. Also I am thinking about joining the African Violet Society but maybe not this year (probably next year) but I am definitely join as soon as possible. Hopefully your leaf offer would still be valid by then or later, because how can I not resist an offer like that (especially for violets).;D Maybe soon when my new plants grow a little bigger, maybe I can give you some leaves for you to propergate (since you been so helpful and all). But I'm definitely joining and let them know that Ann-Marie sent me. Once again, thanks for all your help. :D

  12. You're welcome Dakjak! Just remember, it's spelled "propagate" (wouldn't want you to search and not be able to find what you're after)

  13. Oh, didn't realized I spelled "propagate" wrong. Hehe. :)

  15. Thank you for your great videos! I was so happy to see the new video about separating babies from the "mother" leaf. I will need to do this soon. I want to also grow my violets using your wicking method. Your plants look super healthy!! Jan P. in Huntington Beach, CA
