Stripey Weirdness Is Following Me!?

So today is the end of the world (lolz), and Lenny and I are spending it in the car on our way to New Jersey so I can spend the holidays down there. We decided to take a little detour and go visit Debbie at her lab (I've posted about her a few times here on the blog)...

When I saw this plant of Granger's Sugar Frost on one of her stands, I had to do a double, and then triple-take. I seriously thought all the painkillers I'm on were giving me hallucinations!

Check out how both flowers each have one petal with no stripe. How cool is that?? And why am I running into so many weird things when it comes to chimeras lately? What does it MEAN, I ask you? Ok, the pills are kicking in good now, time for a nap.

Another Mystery Micro Sinningia

What the heck is going on around here? This is another mystery sinningia. Labeled as 'Snowflake', but is very obviously NOT! Snowflake is a pure white with little notches on the petals. Very unique and cute!

This little mystery guy is a deep dark purple (never seen a micro sinn this dark) with a white throat that has purple spots. The corolla is white with a dark purple top. Dark green round/heart shaped leaves. It's REALLY nice looking, but what's it's name??

PS: Sorry for all the "weed" posts lately, what am I turning into, a gesneriNERD??

Mystery Micro Sinningia

Click to biggerize
Found this blooming in my Wood Nymph container today, but it's not Wood Nymph!
I can't find anything like it online, a micro sinningia with six petals?

Either it's a fluke (hope not!), or my Wood Nymph selfed itself and made a new hybrid. That would be so cool! So I have to take extra special care of it and see what happens... Cross your fingers!

Strange Things That Happen: Flowering Sucker Crown At Violet Barn / Facebook Stuff

Check out this crazy pic that The Violet Barn posted on their facebook page the other day!

They wrote:
Today's oddity....a decrowned (chimera) African violet. It's produced a few suckers (which we will root), as well as a number of blooms. It seems that it just cant wait to get started! The variety, by the way, is 'Ma's Lavender Prince', which grows much nicer if one doesn't cut its center out.....

Isn't that crazy?? I've never seen anything like it, but I love the weirdness!

Speaking of facebook, Fuzzy Foliage now has a facebook page! Don't worry, this blog isn't going anywhere, but the facebook page will show in your newsfeed when the blog is updated, and followers can connect and post pics, discuss stuff, announce club meetings & shows, etc.

An even MORE important facebook page to go click "Like" on is this campaign someone started to get one of my photos on a cover of the African Violet Magazine. Sorta like the campaign that got Betty White on SNL. I didn't start it, but I do appreciate the support!

ANYways, enough facebook stuff.

Strange Things That Happen: Belinda's Strange Leaf Baby

Belinda Thibodeaux shared this photo of a very weird occurrence!
She writes:
I know you all have probably seen this before, but it never fails to amaze me what these plants can do. This is a leaf of Yoki propagating in Sphagnum Moss. See the baby growing out of the leaf itself? It's not even touching the moss.

I don't know about everyone else, but I've certainly never seen that happen before. As most of us know, the babies growing from the base of the leaf are "proper". The rogue baby growing from the top/center of the leaf is just crazy--It actually made me giggle when I first saw it!

By the way, for anyone not familiar with Belinda--she's the hybridizer of the new Cajun's series of African violets. (Quick, open your FC2 program and look!) Also, you can check out her online photo albums and see her beautiful hybrids as well as all of the other beautiful African violets she grows (and wow, does she ever grow 'em good!)
